The neck is among the first areas of the body to show the signs of aging. Excess wrinkling of the skin, a double chin, muscle banding, jowl lines, or a “turkey wattle” can make a person appear older, even when the upper face is aesthetically pleasing and retains a youthful appearance.

When the neck and the upper facial appearance don’t match, a neck lift may be the right treatment option. This surgery can also be performed in combination with other cosmetic facial procedures, such as a Facelift, a brow lift, fat injections, and eyelid surgery, for comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire face.

Dr. Christopher C. Chang is a highly-trained plastic surgeon who offers some of the best neck lift Washington DC & Maryland have to offer. He is an authority on facial surgery and has an extensive knowledge of and experience in a wide range of face and neck lifting procedures. Dr. Chang frequently utilizes the most modern, least invasive techniques. Dr. Chang can custom-tailor a neck lift procedure to produces the results you envision.

What Is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to improve the visible signs of aging in the neck and the jawline. A neck lift procedure can correct:

  • Jowls caused by skin relaxation and excess fat in the lower face
  • Double-chin caused by excess fatty deposits under the chin
  • Muscle banding and abnormal neck contours
  • Turkey wattle (loose skin on the neck)

It can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, or in conjunction with other procedures, depending upon the needs of the patient. A neck lift can significantly improve the appearance of the neck and jawline and create a far more youthful profile, with fresh clean lines rather than sagging skin and tissue.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a neck lift?

If you are in good general health, you may be a candidate for neck lift surgery if:

  • You have excess skin and fat in the neck
  • Your neck has folds and lines
  • You have muscle banding and abnormal contours in the neck
  • You want a sleeker, smoother neck and a more definition to the jawline

When you schedule a consultation with Dr. Chang, one of the top providers of the neck lift Washington DC & Maryland have to offer, he will listen to your treatment goals and concerns, carefully evaluate your anatomy, and tell you whether a neck lift is the best treatment option for you.

How is a neck lift procedure performed?

Neck Lift Washington DC

Dr. Chang from Northern Virginia has extensive experience in a wide range of lifting surgical techniques, and will use them to design a customized treatment plan for you. If your skin quality is good, only fat is being removed, and only minimal contouring is needed, a neck lift may be performed using liposuction alone.

More extensive treatment is required to treat significant signs of aging in the neck, such as sagging skin, jowls, a turkey wattle, and a prominent platysma muscle --the muscle that runs from the chest and shoulders along the sides of the neck.

For neck lift surgery, incisions are made under the chin, behind the ears, or in both locations, depending on the specific procedure. The platysma muscle is tightened and sutured together. Excess skin and fat is tailored and contoured. The tissues and skin are carefully repositioned and secured with sutures, and the incisions are closed.

Neck Lift Surgery Recovery

In most cases, neck lift procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, which means that you will be released to return home within a few hours after surgery, depending on how long it takes to recover from the anesthetic. Plan in advance to have someone drive you home after your procedure.

You can expect mild to moderate discomfort after a neck lift, which can be controlled with pain medication. You may experience numbness, tingling, tightness, pulling, burning, cold sensations, or sporadic sharp pains. These symptoms are temporary and usually subside within a few weeks.

Dr. Chang will tell you when to resume normal activities after your neck lift surgery. Rest is important during your recovery period, but it is advised that you get up and walk around a few times every day to improve circulation and help reduce the risk of blood clots. Avoid bending over or lifting objects while you are recovering. Keep your head and neck as still as you can. If you need to turn to look at something, turn your entire body instead of your head to protect the surgical site from pulling.

As with any surgery, there will be swelling and bruising after neck lift surgery, which should begin to improve within the first few days. Sleep with your head elevated for one to two weeks to help reduce swelling. You can accomplish this by sleeping in a recliner or using a foam wedge pillow or two or three pillows to prop up your upper body. As the swelling subsides, you can begin to enjoy the results of your neck lift procedure – a sleeker neck with a more youthful appearance and more attractive profile.

So, if you are considering the procedure, schedule a consultation with one of the top providers of the neck lift Washington DC & Maryland has to offer.
