It can be incredibly frustrating when your mind and body feel young, but your face is showing major signs of aging. As we get older, our bodies start to produce less collagen and elastin, which are important proteins for the health and appearance of our skin. As a result, our facial skin tends to become loose, saggy, and covered in fine lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, there may be a way to turn back the clock on your aging face and start looking as young as you feel at heart. A deep plane facelift could be the perfect option if you’d like to rejuvenate your facial skin and greatly reduce the unattractive signs of aging.

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift is a surgical cosmetic procedure used to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the facial skin to create a more youthful facial appearance. While a traditional facelift involves pulling the skin tightly over the face’s underlying structure, a deep plane facelift addresses the deeper tissues of the face. As a result, the deep plane facelift is able to achieve greater, more natural-looking results.

What Is the Difference Between a Deep Plane Facelift and an SMAS Facelift?

A deep plane facelift is quite similar to another popular type of facelift: the SMAS facelift. SMAS stands for superficial musculoaponeurotic system, which is a network of fibrous tissue located between the skin and the facial muscles. Both the deep plane facelift and SMAS facelift address the SMAS, but they do so differently.

During an SMAS facelift, the SMAS layer is pulled and stretched using stitches. However, during a deep plane facelift, the SMAS layer is separated from the underlying muscles, which allows it to be lifted without tension. For this reason, a deep plane facelift does not result in the overly tight or “pulled” look that can sometimes occur with a traditional or SMAS facelift.

What are the Benefits of Deep Plane Facelift?

For anyone who would like to achieve a more youthful-looking face, a deep plane facelift can offer the following benefits:

  • Smoother, more youthful facial appearance
  • More defined jawline, neck, and cheekbones
  • More natural-looking results than other types of facelifts
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Corrects loose, drooping skin around the face and neck
  • Eliminates jowls and double chins
  • Greatly reduces fine lines and wrinkles

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

If you believe that a deep plane facelift could be the right choice for you, you can get the process started by sitting down with Dr. Chang. During your initial consultation, Dr. Chang will provide you with details about the surgery and answer any questions you may have. He’ll examine your face, jawline, and neck and ask you about your specific aesthetic goals. This will help him determine if a deep plane facelift is the ideal procedure for your needs. Additionally, Dr. Chang will need to know about your medical history, current health, any allergies you have, and any medications you’re currently taking. If you and the doctor decide to move forward with the surgery, he’ll work closely with you to devise a treatment plan that will provide the results you desire.

Before your surgery, you will have specific instructions from Dr. Chang about steps you need to take to prepare. There may be certain medications or activities you need to avoid leading up to the procedure.

Typically, a deep plane facelift is performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and IV sedation. Once you’re sedated, Dr. Chang will begin by making small, inconspicuous incisions near the ears and hairline. He will then use those incisions to carefully tighten and secure your facial tissue and underlying muscles. Once everything has been positioned properly, Dr. Chang will close the incisions and apply bandages to the treatment areas. On average, a deep plane facelift takes around two hours, but the surgery can take longer for some patients.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

You should be able to return home within an hour or two of your deep plane facelift, but someone else will need to drive you. Typically, a deep plane facelift will result in quite a bit less bruising and swelling than a traditional facelift. For the first few days, you’ll need to use a cold compress regularly and sleep with your head elevated.

After around 10 days, most patients are able to start easing into their normal routines. By the two-week mark, you should be back to work and functioning normally. You can resume moderate exercise after three weeks and strenuous physical activity after four to six weeks.

Am I a Candidate for a Deep Plane Facelift?

Adults who would like their faces and necks to be tighter, firmer, and more defined without an unnatural “pulled” appearance could be good candidates for a deep plane facelift. You could be an ideal candidate for the surgery if you meet the following requirements:

  • Be in good physical health
  • Have loose or sagging skin around the face and/or neck
  • Have the desire to add definition to your chin and/or jawline
  • Be free of serious medical conditions
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure

How Long Will It Take To See Results After a Deep Plane Facelift?

After your deep plane facelift, the full results of the procedure will become visible gradually. On average, it takes around six months to see the complete effects, and those results typically last between 10 and 15 years.
