Aging and pregnancy leads to significant changes in a woman's body. During this time, her body undergoes many physical adjustments to accommodate the growing baby, including stretching muscle, fat, and skin.

Every woman is different. Some pregnant mothers gain a significant amount of weight, while other women gain a modest amount of weight. Heredity can also play a role in how the body responds to pregnancy. However, regardless of what physical changes occur during the perinatal and postnatal period, most women agree that their bodies look different after delivery and nursing. This is why Dr. Chang offers his Washington DC mommy makeover procedure.

If you are concerned about the appearance of loose skin and stretch marks from pregnancy, or restoring breasts that appear deflated and saggy after breastfeeding, we can help you regain a tighter, trimmer feminine figure and full, rounded, more youthful breasts. "Mommy Makeover" procedures can include:

How is a mommy makeover performed?

Your mommy makeover will be customized to restore the various body areas affected by pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. The most common three procedures performed in a custom makeover are a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or breast lift, and liposuction. These three procedures are often performed in one surgical appointment.

This is an advantage for you, as it reduces the overall cost of surgery, and has just one recovery time. Other women may require a "staged" mommy makeover, with the procedures in two surgical appointments. You can expect a surgery lasting from two to four hours, while under general anesthesia.

What is the recovery time after a mommy makeover?

The recovery time from these two procedures is typically a total of about six weeks, although most women start to feel close to normal much sooner. They say it was well worth the wait!

Restoring Your Body After Baby

Many women are shocked at the physical changes to the body after pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. The quality of the skin varies from person to person. While some women may not face problems with stretch marks, others are left with a tummy area that appears disfigured, with sagging, deflated skin that causes embarrassment and limits what types of clothing can be worn. Thankfully, a customized “mommy makeover” can do wonders for restoring the abdomen after pregnancy, A tummy tuck can tighten the entire abdominal wall, including the underlying muscles if they have separated, removing much of the overly stretched skin and reducing the appearance of stretch marks significantly.

Breastfeeding is natural, healthy, and has many benefits for mother and baby alike. However, milk production swells the breasts to a much larger size and can stretch the tissues, and change the areola and nipple. When breastfeeding is complete, some breasts may shrink back down and tighten up, but more commonly, loose tissue remains. Once full, round breasts can be left looking saggy, droopy, and deflated. A mommy makeover may include a breast lift along with an implant to restore volume and bring back a fresh, youthful appearance to the breasts, high on the chest. The breasts can be restored to the position and size (or larger) and shape they had prior to feeding the baby naturally.

When Exercise and Diet are Not Enough

Young mothers get stressed about body image after giving birth, and may feel that the look of youth is gone forever – but something can be done about it. Many of the physical changes to the body during pregnancy are difficult – or impossible – to solve with diet and exercise alone. That’s when a mommy makeover can make the difference. Unwanted deposits of fat, saggy tummy skin, and droopy breasts can all be treated by Dr. Chang, our board-certified plastic surgeon. The first step is a consultation, so we can learn about your goals and evaluate your body’s post pregnancy changes, and then we can advise you of the options to restore you to your pre-baby form with one of the most successful providers of mommy makeover Washington DC has to offer.

Planning your Mommy Makeover recovery

You need to plan for your recovery, as you will need help. As a mommy makeover often includes a custom tummy tuck to restore the abdomen to a taut, firm, youthful look, which may require tightening stretched or split muscles, it requires time to heal. Arrange for another person to help you during the first week after surgery - you will be unable to lift your children or perform your usual daily tasks, and need to spend at least a week resting, taking gentle walks, and caring for yourself so you heal properly.

Plan on two weeks off work. While many women may feel well enough earlier, it is important that you have enough time off if you work. Most patients can return to their usual exercise programs after six weeks, after being given the okay by Dr. Chang.

Scars: What to expect

Dr. Chang uses a very meticulous surgical technique for incision closure. The incision sites are carefully placed so that the scars are hidden, even when wearing revealing clothing. With breast augmentation to a breast lift, the incisions are placed around the areola, or in the breast crease in most cases. Tummy tuck incisions can vary in length, depending upon the needs of the patient, but are placed below or around your navel.

Am I a candidate for a mommy makeover?

Undergoing a mommy makeover is a big decision. If you feel unhappy with the condition of your body after having children, you are likely a good candidate for this custom surgery. Generally, a good candidate is in the following condition:

  • In good health
  • A non-smoker
  • Has saggy or deflated-looking breasts
  • The abdomen has sagging skin, tissue, and fat
  • Stretch marks on the lower abdomen
  • Excess fat is lodged on abdomen, flanks, buttocks or thighs

Restoring a firm, youthful figure after pregnancy and childbirth

Many women with children are dismayed with the appearance of the breasts and body after having children. Dieting and exercise cannot resolve some physical conditions. Even losing all the "baby weight" will not fully restore the body if the skin on the abdomen and breasts has been stretched too far. Nature dictates that the woman's body stores fat during pregnancy, a genetically-programmed way to protect the growing baby, and this fat can be very difficult to lose with diet and exercise. A mommy makeover allows you to have the firm, fit body you had prior to having children.

Practice Policy Update Regarding COVID-19 View Update Virtual Consultation

Coronavirus (Covid-19) Update

Updated April 2nd, 2020

After serious consideration and in line with the recommendations of our State and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we are closing the practice until April 24th.

Your health and well-being is our primary concern and we want to do our part to make sure that you are protected.

Effective immediately the following will occur:

  • All procedures and in-person consultations will be suspended until at least April 24th.
  • The office will be minimally or remotely staffed, and we will see our urgent post-surgical follow-ups.
  • We are instituting Virtual Consultations for all potential patients.
  • Many surgeries are rescheduled and some of the ones that are committed will occur on a per case basis.
  • No patient will have any financial recourse for rescheduling their procedures.

We are constantly updating our services and staffing according to the local and national recommendations and will always place your health and well-being as our top priority.

We continue to exercise all the latest recommendations that are handed down by the CDC. These include:

  • Staff have been fully informed and trained to understand the disease process and its modes of transmission.
  • All staff, vendors and ancillary personnel are being asked to refrain from coming to this office if they have any signs or symptoms of a cold or an upper respiratory tract infection.
  • Every patient is also being asked to refrain from coming to the office if they have any symptoms.
  • We are asking our patients about any pertinent travel history.
  • Hand-washing continues to be the most important mode of prevention. Although it is a part of what we constantly do, now we are doing so with heightened vigilance and attention.
  • We have instituted a “no handshakes no hug” policy for now.
  • We have asked all vendors that any unnecessary meetings are canceled until further notice.
  • Any exit and entrance from our office are followed by a protocol of changing shoes, scrubs and sanitization.
  • As we are an accredited medical facility, we are constantly sanitizing all surfaces. We have now vamped that up and our routine, multiple times a day, wiping down all surfaces, desks, door handles, keyboards and restroom facilities. We have assigned a person that does so on a constant basis.

Although Covid-19 is a serious issue, we strongly believe that it will pass and hopefully make our infrastructure and our ability to deal with pandemics in this Country even better than it currently is. We are monitoring this situation on a real-time basis and will not sit back until we know that we have done everything possible to avoid unnecessary exposure.
