Some patients have problems with their facial structure that leave them with an unusual or unattractive facial appearance. This may range from a poor or unbalanced bite to a complex facial form which may require surgical correction.

In these surgical procedures, bone in the jaw may be recontoured, changed in position, or realigned to the proper position, or another procedure can be employed to correct the problem or deformity.

Orthognathic (Jaw) Plastic Surgery

A poor dental relationship can be more than a cosmetic tooth issue. Often, misaligned upper and lower teeth can be the first indication that there is a facial discrepancy present. Rebalancing this malocclusion often results in improving the facial profile, features and surrounding structures. This will often be planned with imaging, computerized surgical simulation, dental models and casts and 3D printing. Dr. Chang uses the most up to date medical technology to deliver precise results where millimeters count. Some of the facial structures that can be resolved at our practice in the Washington, D.C. area include:

  • Overlarge chin structure
  • Undersized chin structure
  • Uneven jaw structure
  • Overbite/Under bite
  • Receding lower jaw

Surgery is performed at one of our fully accredited hospitals and usually an overnight stay is recommended. While you are recovering, a liquid diet will be encouraged and ice and other medications will be used to minimize swelling and expedite your healing as fast as possible.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

At our clinic, we provide care to patients who suffer from a variety of facial deformities or problems with surgical solutions to bring about a more pleasing facial appearance. Craniomaxillofacial surgery is a specialized area of plastic surgery that addresses various deformities in the head, skull, face, neck, or jaw. If you are living with any type of facial deformity, it is important that the surgery performed results in a more pleasantly proportioned facial structure. Surgery done upon the jaw, either to reduce, shape, or enhance the area can change the way your face appears in a powerful way. Some of the facial structures that can be resolved at our practice in the Washington, D.C. area include:

  • Overlarge chin structure
  • Undersized chin structure
  • Uneven jaw structure
  • TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
  • Receding chin
  • Protruding chin
  • Short chin
  • Unusually wide chin
  • Very narrow chin
  • Jaws don’t meet correctly

Surgery is performed at one of our fully accredited hospitals and usually an overnight stay is recommended. While you are recovering, a liquid diet will be encouraged and ice and other medications will be used to minimize swelling and expedite your healing as fast as possible.

Symptoms of Abnormal Jaw Bones

If the facial bones in the jaw have developed abnormally, the aesthetic appearance of the face is only one of many secondary problems that may develop. Disproportionate facial shape can lead to a number of more serious consequences, which can be problematic as adolescents mature or in young adulthood . These symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty chewing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sleep apnea or snoring
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Speech abnormalities
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Behavior problems

Restoring Balance
to Facial Structure

Facial balance is an important aspect of your appearance. The standards of beauty are based upon the proportion of the face, the position and size of each feature, and the relation of the nose and jaw in comparison to the rest of the face. A chin or jaw that is out of harmony with the rest of the facial features is distracting, drawing attention away from more pleasant features, such as eyes, nose and mouth. Resolving facial balance can bring about a dramatic improvement in appearance. At our clinic, we perform various operations to resolve unbalanced facial features and produce a more harmonious and attractive look.

Receding Chin or Overly Protruding Chin

A receding chin has a smaller profile, which slopes backward toward the neck. This creates a disproportionate appearance, often making the nose and mouth appear to protrude. If you are unhappy with your jaw and chin proportions, Dr. Chang can help you get the balanced, beautiful facial profile you have wished for.

The first step is a full evaluation of your facial structure, as well as your medical history. Then a custom treatment plan will be created and discussed with you so you are fully informed about the procedures needed. Contact us today for a comprehensive assessment and evaluation.
