Dramatic weight loss, fluctuations in weight, and the effects of aging on the skin can cause fat deposits and loose skin to droop and hang under the arms. This “bat-wing” effect can be distressing and embarrassing, particularly when the loose hanging tissue flops or dangles when you wave or perform other ordinary actions. Patients often feel self-conscious about this appearance and may try to hide their arms by wearing long-sleeved shirts year-round or when exercising at the gym. The arm lift Washington DC patients are freeing themselves of their "bat-wing".

Arm lift surgery is designed to correct this problem in the upper arms. In an arm lift, or brachioplasty, fat is removed and loose skin is tightened to reshape the contours of the upper arm. The result is a fitter, more toned and proportionate appearance that can boost your self-confidence and expand your fashion choices.

Dr. Christopher C. Chang is a board-certified Washington, D.C. plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience, and who has impressive professional credentials. If the undersides of your arms appear loose, full, and floppy from the armpit to the elbow because of weight loss and excess skin, you may be a good candidate for arm lift surgery. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Chang to find out if this procedure is recommended for you.

Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery

The results of arm lift surgery can be seen almost immediately, although they become more pronounced when swelling and bruising from the surgery subside. Results of this procedure are long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable, healthy weight and fitness level.

An arm lift can produce significant long-term benefits, including:

  • Dramatic reduction of excess fat and skin in the upper arms
  • Better tone and shape of the upper arm’s supportive tissues
  • Smoother skin and contours for a shapelier, more attractive appearance
  • Better proportion of the arms to the rest of the body
  • Hidden or inconspicuously placed incisions

How is arm lift surgery performed?

Arm Lift Washington DC

Arm lift Washington DC surgery is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The pattern and length of the incision will depend on the location and amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Dr. Chang will design a procedure to produce optimal results in your case. Your incision may be concealed in the armpit or hidden as much as possible down the length of the upper arm.

Excess fat may be removed with liposuction or it may be surgically excised. Underlying supportive tissue is reshaped and tightened using internal sutures. Excess skin is removed, the skin is smoothed over your new arm contours, and the incision is closed with sutures. Depending on the amount of tissue removed, drains may be used to reduce swelling and fluid build up, as well as expedite your healing. Recovery is usually a week or two.
