Many people are unsatisfied with the look of their eyelashes. Whether the issue is a lack of fullness, coloring, or a lack of length, many are desperate to attain their ideal eyelashes. Latisse is a powerful tool that can help patients achieve more enticing eyelashes.

What is Latisse?

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Latisse is a medication designed to treat hypotrichosis of the upper eyelashes. It’s formulated with prostaglandin analogue, a powerful ingredient that helps stimulate hair follicles, resulting in thicker, faster-growing hair.

The primary concern that drives people towards this treatment is short eyelashes. However, issues such as a lack of density in the eyelashes can also be a catalyst for seeking out this treatment.

Some of the causes of eyelash shedding include:

  • Localized irritation from cosmetic treatments
  • Eyelid irritation, otherwise known as blepharitis, caused by clogged oil glands in the eyelash region
  • Trichotillomania, an anxiety disorder in which patients tear their hair out
  • Skin cancer in the affected area
  • Alopecia areata.

Latisse treatments require a prescription, which can be attained after having a quick consultation. As certain complications are associated with this treatment, getting a prescription and receiving treatment under the care of an experienced practitioner is vital.

How does Latisse work?

Originally designed as a treatment for ocular hypertension, Latisse has been shown to greatly improve the look of the upper lashes. Its active ingredient, bimatoprost, works by lengthening the anagen (active growth) phase of the eyelashes.

Beyond this, bimatoprost is able to increase the number of lashes in the active growth stage at one time. As a result, the application of Latisse leads to a natural lengthening of the eyelashes.

What are the benefits of Latisse?

  • Improved eyelash thickness
  • Stimulation of eyelash growth
  • Can be used on patients who wear contact lenses
  • A safe and effective treatment option

Who is a good candidate for Latisse?

All patients who are struggling with overly short and thin eyelashes make great candidates for Latisse. While everything from genetics and illness to the normal aging process can lead to a sparse eyelash region, the issue can be treated regardless of the cause. Latisse has demonstrated an astounding ability to increase the thickness and density of eyelashes, with a quick and painless application process that can be carried out before bed.

Ideal candidates for Latisse are 18 years of age or older. The treatment is not approved for patients that are ages 16 and younger.

Patients who benefit from treatment with Latisse include:

  • People who are dealing with thinner or paler lashes due to genetics
  • People with medical conditions that lead to hair loss
  • People who have experienced a hair loss that resulted in injury
  • Those who experienced hair loss after receiving chemotherapy
