When you aren’t satisfied with the way your nose looks, it can make you self-conscious about your entire facial appearance. After all, the nose is located right in the center of the face, and when it’s overly large, crooked, or features a nasal hump or bump, it can distract from your other beautiful features. Many people turn to traditional rhinoplasty to correct these kinds of nasal issues, but some patients prefer to avoid such an invasive procedure. If you’d like to effectively improve the appearance of your nose without significantly altering its underlying structure, preservation rhinoplasty could be an ideal option.

What Is Preservation Rhinoplasty?

Preservation rhinoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure performed to enhance the appearance of the nose while preserving as much of the original tissue as possible. Most commonly, the surgery is used to remove humps and bumps from the bridge of the nose. However, it can also be performed to straighten a crooked nose, reshape the nasal tip, or reduce the projection of the nose.

How Does Preservation Rhinoplasty Differ From Traditional Rhinoplasty?

The biggest reason that people choose preservation rhinoplasty over traditional rhinoplasty is its ability to provide natural-looking results. Typically, traditional rhinoplasty focuses heavily on removing cartilage, bone, and tissue from the nose to adjust its appearance. Although this can be very effective, it can also decrease nasal support and significantly alter the underlying structure of the nose.

Preservation rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is primarily performed by adjusting the existing tissue and cartilage to improve the appearance of the nose. This leads to results that are longer-lasting, more stable, and less likely to require revision rhinoplasty down the road.

  • Reduces nasal projection

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

If you’re considering preservation rhinoplasty, you can discuss the procedure during a consultation with Dr. Chang. During your meeting, the doctor will give you detailed info about the surgery and help you decide if it’s the right choice for you. He will examine your nose and talk with you about what you’re hoping to achieve with the procedure. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions and air any concerns you may have about the treatment.

To ensure that you’re a good candidate, Dr. Chang will need information about your health, medical history, medications you’re taking, and allergies you have. If you decide to progress with preservation rhinoplasty, the doctor will work with you to create a custom-tailored treatment plan. He’ll also give you instructions on how to properly prepare for the surgery.

Usually, preservation rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. To begin, you’ll be administered general anesthesia to render you temporarily unconscious. Once you’re asleep, Dr. Chang will begin by making tiny incisions either inside of your nose or between the nostrils. He will then use those incisions to subtly adjust the tissue of the nose. If you have a nasal hump or bump that needs to be removed, Dr. Chang will achieve this by removing bone and cartilage from beneath the nose rather than the top of it. This will reduce the height of the nasal bridge without altering the dorsal lines. When he’s finishing making adjustments, the doctor will close your incisions and bandage the treatment area. In total, the procedure should take around two to three hours to complete.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

On average, precision rhinoplasty requires a shorter recovery downtime than traditional rhinoplasty. After the surgery, you should be able to return home within an hour or two, but you’ll need someone else to drive you. Dr. Chang will provide you with detailed recovery instructions before you depart, and you may also be prescribed pain medication.

You will likely experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort, but those symptoms shouldn’t be as significant as they would be with traditional rhinoplasty. For the first couple of days, you’ll have a nasal drip pad in case of bleeding. Additionally, you’ll need to irrigate your nose with saline solution for a few months following the surgery.

Frequent rest will be very important for the healing process during the first several days, but you should be able to return to your normal routine after about a week. However, you should refrain from strenuous physical activity for at least three weeks.

Am I a Candidate for Preservation Rhinoplasty?

If you’d like to improve the size, shape, or overall appearance of your nose while preserving the underlying structure, you could be a good candidate for preservation rhinoplasty. Ideal candidates for the surgery should meet the following requirements:

  • Be in good physical health
  • Have not previously undergone rhinoplasty
  • Have a straight caudal septum between the nostrils
  • Have a nasal bump or hump that you’d like to correct
  • Have the desire to reduce the projection of your nose
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure

How Long Will It Take To See Results After Preservation Rhinoplasty?

The results of preservation rhinoplasty tend to appear gradually in the months following the surgery. Usually, you will see the full effects of the procedure within around six months, and those results can potentially last a lifetime.
